The so-called News channels have done it again. The Hindi News channels in particular have shown us why the impact of Globalization is so negative as far as News content in India is concerned. We now rue the fact as to why Doordarshan, which was the Public Broadcaster during the 70's and the 80's not funded and managed properly. It was because of this lack of style and presentation which spelled disaster for Doordarshan. But, now the Indian public are subject to Infotainment Channels like India TV, Star News and all the other so called Tabloid Media.
The latest news being is that Saif Ali Khan was admitted to Lilavati hospital, and this was again considered BREAKING NEWS. In some channels, the BREAKING NEWS Part was flashing on the screen, replaying the whole event again and again. It even spoke in detail as to the guest list that had occured. Although, I should be thankful that the coverage did not go overboard and to nauseating limits when Amitabh Bachchan was ill. In fact, this again shows the hypocracy that Hindi News channels advocate, flashing and jazzing up all rubbish and giving certain actors their due sense of publicity. In fact, the same media coverage was relatively absent when the legendary Composer O.P.Nayyar had passed away. This legend, who had given so many Golden Jubilee song numbers from the 50's till the 90's was given just given a mention in One news channel, that too on a ticker.
This is not to say that Saif Ali Khan is mediocre or that he should not get coverage. He is a fine actor who indeed is a favourite among some sections of the public. His health is of concern to all of us, but my question is as to where do you draw the lines when it comes to covering a prominent personality and giving out real time, informative news. I guess, Entertainment will always test the true values of News, because Film Stars come under the public eye and anything that happens to them has to be covered by the media otherwise the people will abandon that News channel. Till that time, So-called Rubbish like Star News, India TV and Zee News will continue to rake in all the tabloid stuff, and silently kill of Informative News Broadcasting in India.
