Saddam Hussein executed

The spark has been ignited, the world is now waiting for the fire to engulf the Middle East. Saddam Hussein was executed today, and with this Iraq enters 2007 in an atmosphere filled with hatred, blood and tension. The US and the interim Iraqi government now will have to brace itself for more violence, the only difference being that the dynamics of this violence can destabilize the Middle East for a long time.

Saddam Hussein was charged with killing 148 Shiites in 1982 at Dujail. He was also accused of Gassing the Kurds in 1988. This trial has gone on for nearly a year, and this verdict has now raised eyebrows throughout the world. Human Rights Watch group says that Saddam did not get a fair trial, whie the world has questioned the legitamacy and the urgency associated with Saddam Hussein's execution. India strongly condemmed the execution, while several British MP's called for the abolition of the Death Penalty altogether. Some others questioned the composition of the tribunal that dealt with the case of Saddam Hussein.

In the end, the debate will rage on as to wether the trial was conducted in a fair way or not. The US now faces rough times ahead. US President George.W.Bush called the execution an Important milestone for Iraq. However, wether this milestone will be for the good or for the bad will only be judged by time. He also said that Saddam Hussein's execution will not halt the secterian violence, which indicates tough times ahead for the US security forces. With the start of Eid and the Haj, passions will indeed flare up among muslims all over the world. The heat is now on in the Middle East, and it wont be long before it turns into an out of control Fire, which even America might not be able to prevent this time.

The Beginning of Haj

It is that time of the year, when Millions of Muslims from all over the world make their annual pilgrimage to the Haj. The holy cities of Mecca and Medina is where the pilgrimage takes place, and it lasts for close to a month. However, this post is not going to look at the religious aspects of the Haj. This post is going to deal with he backdrop under which this pilgrimage has begun, as well as the dangers and corruption associated with the Haj.

The Haj Pilgrimage of 2006 is taking place at a time when the Middle East is more dangerous than it was ever before. The tension in Iraq has reached boiling point, and things have flared up yet again between Israel and the Palestinians. To add to the whole tension, things are looking extremely unstable in Lebanon, where Shitte Muslims are planning to overthrow the Sunni led government. In Iraq, the death sentence of former Presdient Saddam Hussein is looming large. The events in Iraq is probably the spark that might set the entire Middle East on fire. To the time of writing this entry, the news was being relayed that Saddam Hussein's death sentence will be carried out in a matter of hours. This time, even the Haj is not safe. Al-Qaeda has threatened attacks at the Haj, as well as targetting the Saudi Royal family. So, the Haj pilgrimage is now fraught with more dangers than ever before.

One feature of the Haj that has been there for a long time has been the security arrangements. The period during which the Stoning of the devil takes place is the most dangerous. It is at this time that many people die. To add to the woes, a stampede might break out and might result in large deaths. There is sometimes Gross Negligence on the part of the devotees that can lead to other people getting hurt. For example, in 2002, a Gas cylinder exploded in a devotees tent and this led to several deaths. The world will wait and watch as to how safe this time the Haj is going to be.

To add to the broader troubles, here in India, Bribery and Corruption have tainted the Haj. In an Expose by Cobrapost and IBN, it was revealed that members of the Haj Committee took bribes from poor muslims so that they could go to the Haj. The Government of India subsidizes Haj Quota so that all Muslims can have a chance to go to the Haj. By paying Bribes and manipulating the selection of the people under the subsidized scheme, the people in charge have taken advantage of people's faith. (The full information on the Haj Expose can be seen on www.ibnlive.com)

The Haj pilgrimage is carried out annually and millions of muslims come to the holy site and pray for peace and good wishes. But, reality outside of the Haj is grim and as the years go by, it seems to become more dangerous. 2007 ushers in another dangerous year for the middle east, which will also undergo tremendous change following the events that have taken place in 2006.

The Downward slide of Iraq and the US

The situation in Iraq is approaching a point of No-Return. It is threatening the United States with consequences which will be more detrimental than Vietnam. The day to day incidents in Iraq are degenerating the morale of the American and Coalition troops as well as the Public back home in the States.

The Secterian violence has reached bloodier levels, and the Americans and the Iraqi transitional government are completely helpless to do anything. To add to the tense social conditions, the impending execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is looming. The minority Sunni population have threatened reprisals and anarchy if Saddam Hussein's death sentence is carried out. With the deteriorating law and order situation, the execution of Saddam Hussein will give the Insurgents as well as the Al-Qaeda the smoking gun to carry out their Destruction.

The way in which Saddam Hussein's trial was conducted symbolizes the current state of American Legitamacy to he rest of the world. With 2006 coming to a virtual end, the world will look back and say this was another bloody year for the Iraqi people as well as for the Americans. 2007 may carry with it more danger, and the signals sent out from the American administration are not so encouraging. There seems to be no clear cut agenda as to the withdrawal of American troops, and the US expenditure on Iraq and Afghanistan is coming upto 99 Billion dollars, almost equivalent to the GDP of India.

From the very beginning of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in March 2003, the world was suspicious of America's intention in Iraq. Now, looking at the degenerating situation, the world is now convinced that America has messed up Iraq for good, the only difference being that the US is not immune from this mess. Iraq is in a mess and is heading for Anarchy, and the Americans might not improve it going into the new year. While the whole world might celebrate the coming of 2007, Iraqis might wake up to the fact that another year is ushered when more blood is spilled on the streets.

Nationalism and the understanding of its effect

I recently had read a Paper compiled by a Student at Yale University. The topic was relating to India and it was primarily concerned with the revival of Hindu Nationalism in today's context. Although it was a great compilation of ideas, the end result was a bit disturbing. The argument in some paragraphs was that Nationalism by the majority Hindu Public will act as a safeguard for the Democratic instituitions in the country, and it is this line which disturbs me in a lot of ways.

First and foremost, whenever Nationalist sentiments rise, the primary motive is to change the existing socio-economic order. In the dynamics of today's world, change in the socio-economic system by passive means seems an improbability. Rather, change is bought about by the use of either force or revolution. The bottomline is Nationalism leads INTO Anarchy, while Anarchy degenerates Democracy. Thus, Nationalism instead of protecting democracy instead threatens the very foundation of the democratic setup in the country.

Second, with relation to India, Nationalism will always be interpreted in the context of Post Babri Masjid or Post Godhra. It was indeed these two watershed events that have given Nationalism a deplorable scenario in the country. The dynamics of Nationalism in a particular country yields various results. The question of Hindu Nationalism need not arise because of the fact that the Hindus are a Majority. The world is now no longer at a stage where so few have managed to conquer so many. Hence, the very factor of Nationalism is detrimental to the social tranquility of the country.

Finally, the concept of Hindu Nationalism is not a viable option for the country. Those people who cloak Extreme Nationalism under the pretext of reasserting their presences reflect the real threat to the country. If Hindu Nationalism gains ground in the years to come, it will set of a domino reaction in the whole country. The North-Eastern part of the country, Kashmir and several other minority and linguistic groups will also start of a chain reaction, thus leading into fragmentation. Nationalism might protect te democratic instituitions of a country, but the country itself could itself loose its Integrity.

The future of this country lies in the process of Mainstreaming each section of the population of the country. Following the path of Tolerance, Equality and Secularism will be beneficial for the country. If people can put aside linguistic or religious differences aside, then the country will progess as a great power without the aid of Nationalism. Nationalism might be good in some cases, but it will be foolhardy to believe that this process might achieve the ends of a nation.

Tsunami Anniversary: Two years on

On December 26th, 2004, the Waters swallowed up most part of the Continent of Asia bordering the Indian Ocean. An Undersea Earthquake of Magnitude 9.3 struck the Indonesian Island of Bandah Aceh, triggering a Tsunami which devastated Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Southern States of India. The resulting death toll reached Millions, and the damage done to the economy of the region was enourmous. Two years have gone by, and even today, the horror of the rising killer waves is still etched on People's mind.

Even now, when the Water Levels at Sea rises, the people adjacent to the coast are all scared. The impact of this upon the people's mind has been severe and it demonstrates the unstability of our planet. The Tsunami, is believed to have also changed the world climate as well as changed the rotation speed of the earth. This demonstrates the severity of the disaster.

In India, Tamil Nadu state was very badly affected. The districts of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and places like Kanyakumari bore the brunt of the killer Tsunami. Relief efforts have so far made the life of many affected better, but there is still a long way to go. The relief efforts in India have been nothing short of efficient. Some Newspapers reported that the relief efforts of the Indian agencies in the wake of the Tsunami was better than the efforts of the US federal agencies in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

It is now been two years since the Tsunami struck. But, for several people along the coast and as well for some people all over Asia, this is a period of mourning. They have learnt the Hard way that an Unstable Earth is devastating, and that Humans are powerless to stop it. Beaches are associated with relaxation, pleasentness and tranquility. But, due to the Tsunami, for some people, it is a tragic shattering of that mindset, and that is the ultimate devastation that this has caused.

I am Back and the blog is also back

I was in Chennai from the 18th till the 24th. During this one week, i met with Family members and spend some much needed time together. Although, i have not been a Chennai fan, it was a good outing. It is the time of Marghazhi, the time of the year when the weather is extremely pleasent and not humidly hot as you would associate Chennai with. I also tackled a big problem, notably writing on something which i had no interest whasoever. I wrote about the Indo-US nuclear deal and my style of writing impressed all my family members. I consider that a big victory, and this should help me in tackling complex issues and increasing my know about of various other subjects.

I eagerly waited for the evenings to set in. It was at dusk that i and my Dad would walk to the Beach and spend some soothing time. This was the only constant feature during the entire trip: The Evening Beach Trips. However, it is relating to that region and the beach that my next blog is going to feature about. I spend a good time there, but with no old friends to catch up to, it was boring. But, hey, we all take in the positives and the negatives, and make out something from each and every trip

Family Circles

This post is not going to dwell into the analysis. This post is going to be a poem, not in the pure classical sense, and it will deal with the nuances of Family Life and the mindset of the young one in the family. He now recites his dilemma and the trouble which he has with Family. Here's a short poem about Family Circles:

Families are all meant for each other,
that is what you are told when you are young.
Families are supposed to be of help to you,
Give you support when you are down and in help,
Families are meant for each other.

When the respected in your family starts asserting,
Families are strained and begin disintegrating.
When the elders are complex in nature and extremely proud,
it begins to affect everybody in and around.
When certain members are placed under restriction,
Anger and bitterness start coming up.
But, we were all told that,
Families are meant for each other.

Families are supposed to help fellow members in times of trouble,
thus building admiration and steering them in times of distress.
However, when they help us, but treat us like dirt in return,
it only makes us wonder wether Families are meant for each other.

Families are mutually bound by a sense of togetherness,
hence Families are all meant for each other.
However, when the move to help is overshadowed by constant Jives,
it is then that we wonder wether families are meant for each other.

When Family memebers treat members of their own like dirt,
it starts to affect the well being of others.
Materialism is a danger in the world today,
and it is this which will make Families extinct one day.

We talk of Nuclear Families, perhaps in this age,
they are here to stay and thrive.
With all this, we all wonder wether,
Families are all meant for each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Partnership is over

The 2006 Doha Asian Games has come to an end, with China heading the medals tally with 164 Gold medals. India has come in a respectable 8th Position with a total Gold Medal Haul of 10. In Shooting, Tennis, Chess, Kabaddi, the Indian team has proven itself to be very competitive with the rest of Asia. However, it is in Tennis, in which the country managed two Gold Medals and a Silver, that the people are sad. Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes have now split up permanently, and this pair, which was India's torch bearer in the past, will now no longer bear it.

This pair had put India firmly on the Tennis map. The year 1999 was a Golden year, with the pair coming in the final of all the 4 tennis Grandslams and winning in two of them. The intensity was there even in these games, hence they managed to win the Gold for the country. However, Egoism and Miscommunication have wrecked this pair, and now Mahesh Bhupathi has said that he will never team up with Leander and also he will never play for India as long as Leander and coach Nandan Bal is there.

There is speculation that Nandan Bal instead of Bridging the gap widened it furthur in the Asian Games. He and Leander Paes had questioned Bhupathi's commitment and questioned his ability to play for the country. Bhupathi has gone on record saying that the Doha Asian Games was his emotional Low point of his life, and thus has prompted him to not play with Paes and for India.

Miscommunication, Egoism and a possible Business Rivalry has led to the permanent splitting of India's greatest ever doubles pair. This has shown that personal rivalries and squabbles dominate the Indian players mind, rather than his commitment for the country. The actions of Leander Paes has possibly taken India one step back in the Tennis Map. While the country is in the euphoria of winning 10 Gold medals, nobody might take notice of the fact that the Torch Bearers of Indian Tennis are no longer going to bear the torch for India.

Danger in the Horn of Africa

The Eastern Part of Africa, more popularly known as the Horn of Africa has had few good times. This region has been the focus of attention to the rest of the world on account of floods, Draughts and Famine. But, now the West will turn its attention to he region again, this time for the factor of War. The declaration of an all out War between Ethiopia and Somalia has increased the tension in the region.

Somalia is an example of a failed state. Years of neglect by the outside world has led to the economy of the country collapsing, and the social set up of the country in chaos. The Government is completely weak, and it is the local War-Lords that rule most of Somalia. The US launched an operation with UN backing in 1993 to drive out the Somalian War-lords. It only resulted in the death of 18 American Marines, as well as the UN pulling out of the whole operation. Ever since that time, the economy has collapsed, unemployment is high and the people are turning more towards Crime and Terrorism. The Droughts, Famines and the Floods of all the previous and present years has only made the plight of the Somali people even more desperate.

Ethiopia on the other hand has battled with not only Drought and Famine, but also with a neighbouring Country. Ethiopia has been in a state of War with its neighbour Eritrea for quiet some time now. The Predominantly Christian Government in Ethiopia has waged War with Islamic Eritrea, with an escalation in conflict in the year 2000. The UN has brokered a ceasefire between the two sides, but it has achieved very little in ending the standoff.

Now, this current conflict is concerned about the rise of the Islamists as well as over Mogadischu, the capital of Somalia. Both these sides have been steadily engaged in skirmishes in and around the Border Areas, as well as on the shoreline. The Transitional Government, who has recieved UN recognition, is now been protected by the Ethiopians, but the government does not have much support around Somalia. Hence, the prospects of War between the two countries now seems to be one step closer, and this would have dire implications for the whole region.

Somalia has witnessed Anarchy for the last 15 years, and now with the country in chaos, the population is gearing up for War. The United States of America accuses the Islamists in Somalia to providing a safe haven for Al-Qaeda terrorists, and this is seen as another less talked about front in the ongoing War on Terror. Ethiopia, with the backing of the US, is now preparing for a battle against the Islamists, who await them.

This War, when it takes place, will have dire implications for the whole central region of Africa. With the failure of Sudan with regards to Darfur, as well as the anarchy and tension in the Horn of Africa, the future indeed looks grim for this part of Africa. The West should now realize that it is on account of their ignorance in this region that Anarchy and Collapse took place. Now, they are once more having to confront a War in this region, and the result could be a bloodbath, as one US senator aptly put it.

Resurgence of the Left?

During the Cold War, Militant Trade Unionism was the main weapon that workers had relied on for acquiring their rights. The fear of a general strike was not far away, and this kept the exploitation of the Capitalists at Bay. With the end of the World War, the Left was losing its potential and was on the decline throughout the world. Now, however, the Left Party has become resurgent in the World's Largest Democracy, India, and the Left Parties have called for an All-India strike. The CITU (Centre for Indian Trade Union) sponsored Bandh has paralyzed life in West Bengal, Kerala and several other parts of India.

This bandh by the Left Paries has several demands. These include the Appointments of the workers on Compassionate grounds. They are also demanding the banning of Outsourcing, Privatization and increasing of FDI, among several otheres. However, when the country is supposedly on the path to becoming an Economic superpower, is the Left halting its progress? Will these strikes increase the power of the Left, or will it be considered an irrelevant aspect in the India of this century? Is there a resurgence of the Left in India?

On the face of it, the strikes might seem to show that the Left is in charge. However, it may need a complete change in the mindset of the Left Parties towards the economics of the country. India, in adopting a mixed economy from Independence till 1992, is today playing Catch up to potential economic giants like China, US and Japan. The process of Reforming the economy as well as Decentralization is taking place, although not quickly as anticipated. At this point of time, are these actions of the Left required?

On the other hand, the Left parties have been vigilant at least in the case of the Farmers in the Singur case. The Singur episode has without doubt shown us that Farmers and peasents are subject to exploitation under the Financial might of the Big companies. Although, politically, the West Bengal government wants to satisfy both sides, the Singur case has shown us that the poor in India are in a desperate situation.

Communism and Marxism declined throughout the world because it was a very rigid system, as far as economics is concerned. However, if the Left parties show a degree of flexibility in the economy of the country, only then will we witness the true resurgence of the Left party. General Strikes in today's world is not the means by which the ends will be achieved. By using General strikes as a weapon, it risks two things. One, it will show to the masses that they are interested in only their gains and second, it will paralyze life which will disrupt the nation's productivity.

Under these circumstances, the Left has to have a flexible doctrine to help the government, not destabilize it. It is with the flexibility of the Marxist doctrine, along with the policy of vigilance, which will ensure that no section of the India populace is shunned away from the economic growth which we are witnessing in this century.

The Parliament Attack and its implications

On 13th December, 2001, the symbol of our Democracy, the Parliament, was attacked by Militants belonging to the Terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. In the attack, 9 security personel and a Parliament staffer were killed, and most of the terrorists were also killed. Now, 5 years on, the nation remembers the attacks, and families of the victims mourn their deaths even now. But, the attack on Parliament has now been overshadowed by the events surrounding the Mercy Petition of the Attack Conspirator, Mohammed Afzal Guru. This issue has divided the opinion of the Indian public, and it is raising questions wether Afzal deserves to be hanged or should he be pardoned?

India has often not pursued aggressive policies against terrorism. The fact was illustrated during the IC-814 Hijacking incident. The Government negotiated with the terrorists and they agreed to their demand, and from then on even after the attacks of 7/11 in Mumbai, the policy of the government remains unclear.

Hanging Afzal will achieve one important thing. Firstly, India might perhaps shatter its image to the outside world that it is going soft on Terror. In a recent series conducted by CNN-IBN titled "Decoding Afzal", it mentions the fact that Afzal knew the terrorists and that it is concluded that he was the conspirator behind the Parliament attacks. Certain members of his family have corroborated that Afzal knew the terrorists.

However, the circumstances surrounding the way the trial of Afzal was conducted is still unclear. In 2000, he claims that the Special Task Force (STF) tortured him into confessing his role in the Militancy in Kashmir. Also, there are allegations that Afzal did not get a Fair trial, and that some evidences have been faricated against him. Hence, the debate wether Afzal should get the death penalty is being put on hold.

Until and Unless, the Public should not be distracted too much by the Afzal Case. They should reflect upon a fact that no nation, no symbol of Democracy is safe from the Terrorists. This event should be a rallying point that terrorists deserve No Mercy, and by the rightful execution of the Judicial processes in a Democracy, they should be put to death.

The Middle East Fire

I had recieved a powerpoint presentation regarding the ongoing conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The presentation showed images of Palestinians fighting the Israelis, wounded as well as Dead individuals during clashes. It was however the remaining final slides which struck a chord of discontent within me. Some of these slides gave reasons for Children taking up arms against the Israelis, as well as confronting the military head on during incursions. One particular slide showed a Palestinian mother being murdered by Israeli Police in front of her child. It is these images which the world has perhaps not seen.

The dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is such that any material provided by both sides is considered equivalent to Propoganda. Because of the unrelenting Biasness of the Arabs towards the Israelis, whatever material that they show to the outside world is considered Propoganda. This conflict has always kept the Middle East boiling and now the factor of Iraq has been added to make it boil to dangerous proportions. This third Intifada has dragged on for 6 years, and the prospects for peace look even more distant. The Palestinian public has chosen a Hamas led government to lead them. This government has reiterated that it will not recognize Israel, and the situation has returned back to square one, with no side willing to negotiate.

What should we People make out of this conflict? Should we trust the Israelis and go by their claim that they are only doing these incursions into Palestinian territories as Self-Defence? Should the Palestinians be trusted as to the fact that this is really their land? The bottomline is that We do not know who is right and who is wrong in this conflict. The cycle of violence and Hatred is such that not one side can be accountable for everything. If something happens on one side, it is blamed on the other side for bringing it on themselves.

The slideshow put out certain facts, and one slide might be turning to reality. Whatever happens in this conflict, generations of Israelis and Palestinians for sure will be affected. Until then, there might be more spilling of blood in this land. The fire could become the Apocalypse in the near future, and the world is watching it helplessly. It will be made more difficult, for every aspect of the "Supposed Truth" will be treated as PROPOGANDA.

The Singur Showdown

Things are at a boiling point at Singur, a small farming village in West Bengal. The farmers, on whose land, Tata Motors is deciding to build a Factory for their unique Car, are planning to march to Kolkatta. Trinamool Congress Party chief Mamta Banerjee, along with other Parties have staged rallies, while Mamta Banerjee has decided to go on a Hunger strike. All this is posing a dilemma to Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the Chief minister of West Bengal. The standoff is continuing, but it seems that the damage to the Tata's has been done. There is speculation that they may reconsider their decision. This controversy has perhaps highlighted the problems of Capitalism and the dilemmas that India's growing economy might have to face.

The Singur standoff has symbolized the negative impact of Capitalist ventures, with Farmers land being requisitioned for use by Industries for their benefits. With the arrest of Prominent Social Activist Megha Patkar, the situation has gone from bad to worse. Even worse, she was turned away from the site and was not allowed to meet up with the protestors to express her solidarity. This time, however, the Farmers seem to be holding up their own, and their agitation has not fizzled out, and is all set to reach Kolkatta.

This is not the first time that large Capitalist companies have faced the brunt of Social Activists and Farmers. The Coca-Cola agitation in Kerala was an example of one MNC facing the brunt of the ordinary people. This time, the Tatas have been at the recieving end, and this unlike the Coca-Cola campaign, looks to have an outcome rather than a suppression.

Should the Singur showdown be labelled as a Capitalism versus Socialism fight? Not yet. The nation is watching this event closely, and its outcome will decide the fate that Peasents and Farmers have in the New India. Are they destined for more ruin, as in the case of the rising numbers of Suicide are concerned? Are they always going to be on the wrong side of the fight, if large Corporates show their muscle? Is this the time when the Real India speaks out? Only the events of the coming days will give us an indication.

The Holocaust Debate!!!!

The Holocaust is now a topic for a hot debate. It is going to happen in Iran, where President Mahmood Ahmedinijad has called on 30 scholars to attend a conference regarding the Holocaust debate. At a time when there is subsequent tensions in the middle east regarding Iraq and Palestine, this debate is all set to add fuel to the Middle East fire.

From the time he has come into office, Mahmood Ahmedinijad has called for Israel to be wiped off from the map and also questioning the existence of the Holocaust. He has believed that the Holocaust has been used by Israel as an excuse to create their state, and hence has refused to acknowledge the occurence of the Holocaust 60 years ago.

This "Debate" will not win Ahmedinijad any friends in the west. His continued insistence for Israel to be wiped out from the face of this earth is bound to make the situation tense and could in the near lead to a showdown between Israel and Iran.

For decades on decades, the world has been told that the Holocaust did happen. More than 6 million Jews were killed by Hitler's Nazis in World War 2. The ensuing death March and the death walk from the concentration camps has been well documented and well photographed. The Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem displays the horrors of the holocaust as well as provides a memorial site for all the victims who perished in the camps. This has been one of the most tragic incidences that have taken place in the history of mankind.

Now, all of a sudden, President Ahmedinijad has opened the Pandoras Box and claimed that there was no Holocaust. How should these actions be interpreted? Should it be interpreted as a statement of Brazen, Hardline Nationalism? Should it be interpreted as a Personal Prejudice only to gain Political Mileage? Wether it should be interpreted as a symbol of a man standing up to the West and contradicting their "accepted" fact? The subject is surely inflammable, and looking at the History books, it seems to be suggest that the Iranian President seems to be on the wrong side of History, and his antics could ultimately affect his nation's future.

The Absence of a Sports Culture in India

First and for all, i would like to congratulate Jaspal Rana for his amazing performance in the 25 metre Pistol shooting event at the Doha Asian Games. This congraulations is also extended to the other people who have won a Gold medal for the country. The reason why they won the Gold medal was out of pure determination, and not because of any other factor. This brings us to a question of developing a Sport Culture in our country. At present, Performances by India on the sporting arena have been far from impressive. The decline began from the period of the 1980s, and it has remained stagnant ever since that period.

This topic was considered during the Indian Cricket team's disaster in South Africa. This bought into question India's disastrous performances in Hockey, Football as well as the Olympics. The follwing paragraph dwells into the facts that Indian Sporting performances have gone two steps back, while the Rest of the world has gone one step ahead with their performances.

The performances of China in the recent past and Australia for a long time are proof that an Active programme of encouraging Sports from a very young age can have the desired impact. Even dedicated commitment from the government of the nation, in terms of providing modern, up-to-date and World Class facilities, can lead to an improvement in Sporting performances. The practice of making Sports part of the regular curriculum can also produce a very active and strong Sporting Culture.

Unfortunately, India falls short in all of the above categories. Even if facilities are up-to-date, as in the case of Cricket, the team is not mentally strong or prepared to face adverse circumstances and conditions. With the absence of all the above, it is no wonder that sportsmen in India do not live up to the potential.

In China, where the above criterions are more and less satisfied, the results are there for everyone to see. In the 2000 Olympics, China managed a haul of 10 or so Gold Medals. In the 2004 Olympics, they gave the United States a close run for the medals race by winning 32 Gold Medals, with the US getting 34. The Australians are so mentally strong that they do not get intimidated by the opponents. The 2006 Football World Cup was an example. Australians have never achieved anything big in this sport. But, they progressed to the second round, beating Japan and drawing with a good team like Croatia. They even gave the eventual World Cup winner Italy a scare, and it was a controversial penalty which ultimately won it for Italy.

Contrast this with India, and they suffered a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of the Koreans in the World Cup Qualifiers. India has also not done well in the Olympics. Their last Gold medal was at the 1980 Moscow Olympics in Hockey, and from then on, they have struggled to win a single medal. Karnam Malleshwari's Bronze in the 2000 Olympics and Col.Rajyavardhan Rathore's Silver Medal in the 2004 edition have been the only significant achievements, with the media covering them as if they alone won a 100 gold medals in total.

It is about time that people in India stop being so ignorant of our declining standards of performance in Sport. The Private sector and the Government must be pressurized actively so that funds can pour into improving the infrastructure of Sports facilities. With the provision of world class, technological and up-to-date facilities, Indian sport culture can begin its journey.

It is also important that the mindset of the general public, Media and the sports administrator change. Let us not scrutinize and go gung ho to Nauseating proportions about Cricket and the English Premier League. Let us enhance the Sports Culture of this country, so that we do not face any more dissappointments at the world stage, as well as shunning Sportsmen who afterall are doing our country proud. Let us provide them with the best we can offer, for Determination in this world is simply not enough to get results.

What do you define as a True Indian?

I have been thinking about this for a while, and I am going to ask this question in this following post. I am just asking this to all the people who belong to the country of India as well as Indians who live abroad. What are the criterions by which you define a True Indian? This question has plagued me for a long time, and with Indian Society already undergoing a tough time following the 7/11 Blasts as well as spate of Terrorist incidents pre 7/11, this question is being asked to a lot of people.

In today's society, you are considered Unpatriotic if you follow a policy of appeasement to the Minority ( In this case, the Muslim community), or if you are a proclaimed Secularist. If you do not stick to the majority, then you are not considered an Indian. This dangerous trend of Irrationality seems to have emerged in certain sections of Society, and this time the Voices are sounding more Bitter and Angry.

Just what do you define as a True Indian? If you follow the policy of hating Pakistan as well as the Muslim community, are you considered a patriotic Indian! If I take the side of the minority community here, and I belong to a different community, then am I considered as an Unpatriotic Indian! All these questions and proclamations in the past have been called forth by people who call themselves Nationalists and are on a mission to save the country.

They make the comparison of India to the rest of the world and question wether we have to follow this so-called Policy of "Appeasement" to the Muslim community. Arresting of certain leaders from a community and leaving the rest to preach their sermons is being made an issue against the secularists. This is in reference to the arrest of Pravin Togadia of the VHP and the lenient approach to the Shahi Imams in UP.

All these questions that have been put above shall be answered, but it is sure that this will not have an impact on the thinkng that has gripped Certain sections of Indian Society.

As far as the question of comparing India's attitude towards its Minorities is concerned with the rest of the world, we should understand that their Socio-Economic setup is much different than us. The diversity and the very nature of the population mix makes us advocate the policy of Secularism as well as the process of Assimilation. If these two above processes are achieved, only then India can progress. India need to look only at US to understand the amount of social tranquility that they have achieved following the assimilation of the Black community in the 70's. Several Flaws do remain, but America is the world's number one economy because all sections of the population have been assimilated in to the mainstream.

As far as the arrest of VHP leader Togadia and the leniency towards the Shahi Imam is concerned, there is a clear case of Politics and an opportunity to grab a bit of the Media publicity. Primarily the factor of communal politics is being played out there, and looking at how the social sections of India are organized, it is bound to lead to trouble. This also highlights the Politicizing and Drawbacks of the Criminal Justice system, for not classifying all people who incite trouble and violence as Offenders.

As far as the appeasement of the Minority communtiy is concerned, the CONSTITUTION is the supreme Law of the land, wether we like it or not. Nobody is above the Constituition, and it advocates a Policy of Secularism. If the First Amendment of the US Constituition makes it stand out, then our Secular Doctrine makes our constituition stand out. By following Secualrism, it is upto we the citizens to practice the levels of Tolerance in the face of absolue trouble. Tolerance will not give instant success, but if we adher to it, the success will come in. This claim is backed by Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha movement, which helped us in a way to get Freedom from the British.

So, What is a True Indian? According to me, a True Indian is somebody who does not incite hate against fellow men, who advocates the policy of tolerance and ensures that Social Tranquility is maintained at all costs. That to me is what a True Indian is, that is what mankind really is all about.

The Dilemma of the Future

This post dwells into a mindset of a guy who is going to the UK next year. He is very happy, but is also having to face certain realities. He is also wondering wether it will be worthwhile. He is also concerned about the prospects of a better life and also wether he should to his country or not. Time seems to be running out, but some decisions have to be taken.

This guy did not have the best of school days, was picked upon and also was a Coward, who lied at each and every turn. He could never speak up for himself, and he suffered for it for 15 years. After hitting Rock Bottom in 2003, he picked up the pieces, searched for answers from within and decided to work hard. It bought him success, lots and lots of Friends and also he changed his mindset about life. He was the personification of Positive energy, exhubarance and also supreme confidence. The success in Academics and Practical work came to him in the form of a Distinction score and also a good entrance score for the UK. Now, the chances of getting into a top UK University with an in-house scholarship looks bright.

But, unfortunately, several things have cropped up now by which he is in a dilemma. He has been forced to shatter his bubble of Idealism, as well to consider his attitude towards his own country. It is right here that he is criticized by his close ones wether his future really is in going to the UK. He is also outspoken about the problems that plague his country, and hence he is being told to change his attitude towards his country.

He insists that Anything is and should be possible in life. He insists that he will never put down his country, inspite of the flaws in his homeland. As one actor in a Hit film said, "No Nation is Perfect. We have to MAKE it Perfect". His assertion is that it is better that we do not remain ignorant about the things that happen around us, and that it is better to remain outspoken. Although his dilemma is far from being resolved, he has a strong will to do well, after having an Inferiority complex for so long. Hence, he looks up to the future for better things and also to find avenues by which he shall be self-dependant and also be a better individual than before.

The Futute indeed look right ahead and also beckons him. But, in an alien land, and also looking at the dynamics that are in motion in the world today, it is no wonder that the dilemma persists. Now, many people might not agree with the heading, because now it is commonplace to insist that the future is no bright and is uncertain. But, the factor of hope is what makes Humans so progressive. The dynamics that are prevelant in today's world makes the human spirit adjustable and also strong to conquer the wave. It is with this that life moves on.

The Day Secularism died

Today is the 6th of December, and on this day 14 years ago, India changed. The very social fabric of the nation underwent change. The Demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on that day created deep divisions in society. Communities who were living in Harmony now look at each other with suspicion. The aftermath of the demolition was riots everywhere, declaration of a nationwide bandh, and the aftermath leading to the deadly Mumbai Blasts of March 1993. Even today, the events of December 1992 have a bearing on the psyche of the Indian Public. There are frequent reminders of this incident, the only thing being it takes various forms. The Godhra carnage of February 2002 was an indication of the fanaticism that people can plunge into.

Even today, the issue is contentious and filled with uncertainties. Doubts linger wether there was a temple beneath the Babri Masjid. The ASI so far has not found any clues by which the remains of a temple can be substantiated. The communal disharmony that this issue has created is bound to put the country in tremendous peril. The factor of tolerance is now missing among the general public, and everytime a Bomb explodes or riots occur, a certain community is put under suspicion and scrutiny.

The Godhra Carnage of 2002 symbolized the Fascism that a particular Government can advocate. Because of this incident, the Muslim community in Gujarat has been Ghettociased, and this process of isolation seems to be continuing. The ghettociasing of Muslim community follows the precedent in the aftermath of the Mumbai serial blasts in 1993. Sections of the population in the city were displaced, and it has remained like that ever since. Now, the Division between the Hindu-Muslim community on this issue has become deeper, and it doesnt look as if any party is ready for reconcilliation.

The Babri Masjid demolition and its subsequent aftermath has degenerated the Indian Psyche, much the same as Vietnam did to the Americans in he middle part of the 70's. The factors of Tolerance and Secularism have been thrown out of the window. Anybody who does not follow a policy of 'Us and Them' is labelled Unpatriotic. The situation prevails in most parts of the country. The scars may never heal, and perhaps one incident like 7/11 blasts in Mumbai, but of a greater magnitude, could perhaps burn this country all over again.

The events of the Babri Masjid show us the dangers of Organized Religion. It has shown us that a state where Societ is oriented along religious lines is bound to fail. Politics based on Communalism will break this country into a milion pieces. Organized religion can bring about misplaced passions and a sense of false reassertment, thus marginalizing people and doubting their love for the nation. If this country has to progress furthur and into the 21st century, then any form and symbols of Organized Religion must be purged, so that no Babri Masjid and Godhra incidents scar this nation. Let us all unite and not purge populations, but rather symbols of Organized Religion. Let us rekindle Secularism and a sense of reconcilliation, for that is the only method of moving forward of the times.

The Belief in God and the Negativity of Religion

This Post is going to have a bearing today as well as Tommorow. The 6th of December post will have this as a backdroper. First things first, the views that i am going to express on Religion are my own, and is not intended to hurt anybody's religious sentiments. This post should not be thought of as an outcrop of Communism as well, for this ideology portrays religion as an opium for the people. This post should be considered as an individual interpretaion of certain things by which i am going to advocate the following things.

By implying the negativity of religion, i am taking into account the happenings of the world today. The very factor of Religion is causing deep polarizations within the realms of Humanity. This is more evident in the functioning of Iraq today, the Communal tensions that plague Indian Society. The factor of Organized religion is more potent in today's world, and by the religious polarizations that is evident in the world today, it would be best if Organized religion is outlawed along the lines of Organized crime.

It is because of Organized religion that problems are galore. The nature and interpretation of religion is full of complexity. By expressing it in large numbers, there are bound to be problems. The Hindu-Muslim tension and he Shia-Sunni conflict are examples of these problems at the Micro and Macro level. The very factor of religion is also causing deep divisions in humanity as well. Certain sections of people who have a different belief in somethings are marginalized and isolated. The case of certain sections of the Muslim population in some parts of India are proof of that statement.

As far as the question of God is concerned, the common saying goes, "God Created Man, Man Created Various Gods." Of course, i do not believe that it was God who created man, but rather by the process of evolution that Man EVOLVED. It is evident that people look up to God when they have nothing else to lean on. People need God so that they can have something to fall back on, whenever something goes wrong. The concept of God, as a whole, reflects the typical human mindset, hypocritical and selfishness.

In the end, i am not calling for the destruction of religion as a whole, but i am advocating the policy of purging ORGANIZED RELIGION. Religion, according to me, should be confined to the four corners of your house only. The next post will be evident of the problems that symbols of Organized religion can lead to the fragmentation of the Human race. Let us keep something so Complex to ourselves, for we have seen the destruction that this complexity will cause to the very existence to Human Beings.

While India Slept...................

Yesterday, while the whole country was asleep, there has been another Naxal incident in Chattisgarh. A Group of 700 naxals attacked the CRPF camp in Bijapur, in the district of Bastar in Southern Chattisgarh. This is in a series of attacks that the Naxals have carried out in the region for a period of two-three years. While the Naxal menace has been on the increase over te past decade or so, the public continues to be wary of Islamic fundamentalists carrying out Suicide Bombings in Kashmir. The naxal threat represents an even bigger problem as they are the enemy within, and they are operating in a Red Corridor, in particular in the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Eastern UP and now in some parts of West Bengal. It is about time that administrations wake up to the grave danger of Naxalism.

The Naxal Problem can be interpreted in several ways. The menace may be looked up as a purely terrorsit problem, or it can be looked as the result of the complete failure of the Agrarian System in India. The resulting failure is also making the peasents and the rural majority turn to Naxalism for echoing their plights. The second interpretation fits into the scheme of things presently, looking at the Socio-economic balance the country is in now.

The Naxals have refused to recognize the present state of India, laced with so many disparities. The Naxals, while indulging in their wrongful ways of violence, are also telling us loudly that the majority of the people are in ruins. The Naxal menace has shown us that there are two sides of the country, an Urban India and a rural Bharat. The Urban side will claim that India for them is shining and that it is booming like never before. The Rural Bharat will claim that they have to fight for their survival on a daily basis, and that they are not booming, in fact they will say that they are on the verge of Collapse.

The continuing menace of the Naxals is evidence that the Agrarian and rural system in India is on the verge of collapse. Unless and until this problem is not talen up Seriously, they will grow bolder and will indulge in large scale terrorizing of people. The Citizens and the various administrations have to come forward and ensure that there is equitable distribution of wealth, facilities alloted for the poor, as well as providing the basic universal aminities to the poor. The Agrarian system in he country needs modification and reform, so that Farmers do not commit suicide, thus lending legitamacy to the Naxals. Let us awaken to this Grave problem, and ensure that Naxal activities do not succeed. The Dynamics of Politics and thinking of individuals in today's world suggest-"Bullets and Vigilance are the two weapons by which menaces can be stopped." Let us not turn our eyes away from this problem, because it will be dangerous to our country's very foundation if we do so.

A Glimpse of History in the Holy Land

Just about three days ago, i went to the National Museum here in Bhopal. Now, many people would not consider a trip to the museum something worth writing about. But, i went at a time when an Israeli Archaelogical exhibition was going on. This exhibition was displaying aerial photographs of certain Archaelogical sites in Israel. There were a total of 15 big Photographs on various historical sites in Israel. I admired at the sheer beauty of the photographs, as well as reminded myself that Israel is also made up of other things other than for the dubious reasons which the media portrays it for.

I was most impressed with the Photographs pertaining to Jerusalem, Acre, the caves of Qumran and the archaelogical sites of Masada and other excavated sites. It is a fact that Israel consists of the largest number of Archaelogical sites per square kilometre. The Historical information also was indeed valuable, and it makes people go to the Holy Land to get a glimpse of this surreal country. But, looking at the photographs and the historical context, i unfortunately again reflect upon the plight that the country is facing in the 21s century.

History has been grossly against the Jews, for they have been under occupation from all of the Great empires, ranging from te ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Romans, Greeks, Byzantines, Ottomans and the British. The Jews were expelled from the holy land in the early part of time, and this lasted right upto the present. It is perhaps this history that continues to haunt the Jews, in particular relating to the years prior to the creation of their state. The Horrors of the Holocaust in World War-2 have lended a somewhat crude legitamacy to their state. Even now, they continue to fight for their existance, this time from the Arab nations that surround them.

History also has played a great game for this land, for the birth of three of the most prominent religions have taken place on this same land. Jerusalem is the Holy city for three of the most prominent religions in the world, notably Christianity, Islam and Judaism. The eternal City of Jerusalem is home where Jesus, Mohammed and Yahweh have left their mark. All these Historical events and symbols are having an indirect impact upon the dynamics that Israel is undergoig at this time.

They say that the past influences the future. This is more true of Israel than any other country. The only problem being that this History is threatening the present. Maybe, it is this historical legacy of varied kinds that might threaten the future as well.

The Years just keep passing on

Today is 2nd December, and it was on this day 22 years ago, that a fate of a city was changed for generations. Even today, Bhopal is fighting a losing cause, and i cannot ignore or forget the fact that the scars will linger on. 22 years have passed ever since the Worst Corporate Disaster of the 20th Century took place in Bhopal. The Bhopal Gas tragedy is an example of how the common man is powerless before the strength of the multinational companies and the government. It is also an indication of how the law can be a weapon only in the hands of the Powerful.

Yeaterday, on Vividh Bharati Bhopal, i was listening to the broadcast of how the compensation part of the Gas Tragedy has been settled. Over 5 and a half Lakh people have been provided compensation from the 10 lakh or so affected in the tragedy. But, there is no attempt on part of the government to give justice and to punish those responsible for such an irresponsible act. This event is an exception of how flawed criminal justice system is in India.

The Media is only concerned with the happenings of the Jessica Lall Murder case or the Nitish Katara Murder case, since they are all high profile victims. Some News channels organized a campaign titled "Justice for Jessica" durring the entire process. Debates were organized, and whole sections of the population took out protests demanding the accused be punished. The recent verdicts in the cases have been hailed as a victory by the media and that the people are starting to believe in the judicial system of India. But, why isnt the Media so Vigilant and Pro-Active in the Bhopal Gas case? Is it because it is buried in the annals of Time? Is it because the Media are plainly not interested?

The Media in India is undergoing a communication revolution, with Private News Channels cropping up in both English and Hindi. So, they have opened up possibilities where-in no story is left unturned. Even as i write this, there can be a guarantee that no media coverage of the Gas tragedy along the lines of Jessica Lall or Nitish Katara would have been possible.

The Perpetrators of the Bhopal Gas tragedy are now leading a Scott- Free life at the cost of millions. The main accused at the time, CEO of Dow Chemicals, Warren Anderson, is enjoying his old age in some part of the United States. The government's inability to do something for the Gas victims is indeed deplorable. This case in the near future might never be covered with vigour, because it does not satisfy the advertisers and other Mulitnational companies, who may hold a stake in the media.

The Worst Disaster in Corporate History of the 21st century is being neglected in front of our own eyes, yet we do nothing about it. Many people whom i interacted did not even know that today is the day when the disaster happened. Public Memory is fading, Media does not even care, the only people who seem to care and wan to know about the Gas tragedy refer to exhibitions by renowned photographer Raghu Rai. But, inspite of all that, we will all come to know about the trivial aspects which plague society. Gossip about stars, politicians, their inabilities and Crime will be forever etched in the minds of today's people, but something like the Bhopal Gas tragedy will never be remembered.

It is perhaps because of this indifference that it rained heavily in Bhopal today. The symbol of the gloom that is in the city on this day, and furthur enhanced by the ignorance of the general public in India. Now, it is we ordinary people who weep for Bhopal and demand justice for the people. But, we all have to face a mountain of indifference and ignorance. It is going to be like this always from now on, it will always be like this.

Should it be Taken Seriously?

Iranian President Mahmood Ahmedinijad is known as a Hard Liner to the West. Ever since he came to power in 2005, he has followed a Bold Foreign Policy, and often Outspoken. From the time of Denying that the Holocaust ever took place, to once again denying the existence of the Israel, to now sending letters to the American Administration criticizing their foreign policy in the Middle East. Yesterday, President Ahmedinijad sent a letter to the White House, criticizing them on their policies in the Middle East. The link to the letter, for anybody who wants to read it in detail, can see it on the New York Times Website (the 30th November issue in World section, Number 22).

The Bush Administration deemed the letter irrelevant and they have dismissed it as hypocritical. They accuse Iran of deviating away from the main issue of Iran's Nuclear Programme. But, Can these frequent rantings of President Ahmedinijad against the US be ignored? Is the US policy in the Middle East now really flawed? Is President Ahmedinijad echoing the sentiment of millions around the world?

The United States is already having a tough time in the Middle East, with many already saying that this is America's Second Vietnam. The number of US Soldiers who are dead in Iraq is already very high, thus some groups are calling on US Troops to leave the country. The secterian violence has reached fearful proportions and many feel that a Civil War in Iraq is imminent. As I am writing this post, the Shia Al-Sadr Group have blocked talks with the Minority Sunnis and their leaders. The Insurgency on both sides has been quiet violent and it peaked to a bloody level in November. Car Bombings in Baghdad, subsequent destruction of shrines in several Shia areas and mortar attacks in the Sunni areas have made this country very dangerous. There is no doubt about the fact that Iraq is in a BIG MESS, and America is losing control of it quickly. The interim government is being rendered dysfunctional and deadlocked, hence there is no progress on any front.

Israel represents a complex problem that has been going on ever since it was created as a state in 1948. Several hard attempts for peace are being blown away quiet easily by either Suicide Attacks, Rocket attacks by the Palestinians or by Israeli Military incursions. The Palestinian Authority is weak and has no control over its several factions, while Hamas refuses to be recognised by the Governments of the West. The continuing frustration between the Israelis and the Palestinians seems to have no end.

America now has two problems in the Middle East, both potentially deadly and ruinous problems. It has World Opinion firmly against it, for the way it went into War in the first place during 2003 in Iraq. It has continued to ignore warnings of several of its allies, regarding the Middle East Problem. Now, the American Administration is strongly Bi-Partisan, with President Bush a Lame Duck and he Democrats controlling both the houses.

Now the contents of the letter in general refers to the Lies that the administration has told the American Public. It refers to the plight of the captives in Guantanamo Bay and calls it illegal. The Abu-Ghraib prison scandal, and their continued support for Israel has been highlighted in the letter. Should the world, in particular the US take this letter very seriously? Let us look at the reasons why wether some aspects should be taken seriously or not.

As far as the position on Guantanamo Bay and the Abu-Ghraib Prison scandal are concerned, America did not give out the whole picture. America continues to hide away certain things relating to Guantanamo Bay. The factor of Accountability is simply not there when it comes to the plight of all those captured in the prison. The Abu Ghraib Prison scandal exposed the crude Psyche that American troops can degenerate too. Hence, President Ahmedinijad is correct when he says that the US administration has not been entirely honest about Guantanamo Bay. The administration is also i feel trying to cover up the impending Disaster in Iraq by stressing upon the factor of patience. Majority of Americans feel that the War is not going well, while some people do not even know what is really happening on the ground in Iraq.

As far as the problem of Israel and Palestine goes, America is simply deadlocked. President Ahmedinijad does not understand the American role in Israel. The Americans have cut off financial aid to the Palestinian Government, thus pressurizing them in a way to recognize Israel's right to exist. But, it should strongly admonish Israel for conducting the illegal military raids into Palestinian territory. But, it is hard to admonish this fact that Israel is conducting these raids as a form of Self-defence. Perhaps, and VERY REGRETFULLY, the boundary wall that Israel is building along the West Bank seems to be the only option. The situation is very tense in the Middle East. You have the problems of Iraq and Israel-Palestine, you have an radical (possibly Nuclear) regime in Iran and there is a possibility of the Government in Lebanon being toppled in a coup by Hezbollah. It is a situation that America did not anticipate, and is possibly paying the price for it.

Ahmedinijad has asked the questions to the American administration. Wether it is for for the purpose of building up his power base or wether to divert attention away from the problem of Iran's Nuclear Programme is irrelevant. The question is being posed, and the American Public indeed must ask these questions to the government, afterall, this is what a Democracy is. So, this letter indeed should be taken up seriously, first by the Media and then the American Public, only then will they be immune from the crisis which is posing a very grave danger to the them
