The most prestigious football league in the whole world. The league that has captured the attention of billions in Asia, in particular in India. The EPL and its players are one of the most talked about in all of the major cities in India, and its popularity has grown over the years. But, having myself watched the EPL today, i am wondering as to what is all this talk all about? The EPL is not special, in fact it is so boring!!!!! Yes, you read it right. The EPL is the most boring football league in the world, as well as the most hyped around thing in the whole world. These are my arguments against the EPL.
Players who come into the English Premiere League come for the money part. In the EPL, the Advertisers might probably dominate over football, and even mediocre players are all bought out into the spotlight. More Prestigious clubs like the Bundesliga, Serie-A are were true footballing skills are exhibited. But, since, real football is considered too slow and boring, the EPL glitzes it up with a lot of analysis, and a better packaging of an otherwise poor product, as far as quality is concerned.
The main reason why the EPL is hyped up reflects in the performances of the English National team in the World Cups or other football events. The English Football team has always choked up on the big stage, notably in the World Cup, where their best performance has been winning the World Cup, way back in 1966!!! The Current English team is also not setting the football world on fire. Players like Frank Lampard, Theirry Henry, Michael Ballack all are considered the Gods of EPL, while on the National side their performances are worse than a second division team. The case to point out is Frank Lampard. In the 2006 edition in Germany, he had 31 attempts on goal, and he converted None of them. So, this is furthur proof that the EPL is just a hype, and nothing else.
I still cannot wonder why people in India choose to follow the EPL more ardently, rather than the Serie-A division, Bundesliga or even South American football. The reason given for lack of viewership for South American football lies in the fact that not many matches in South America are broadcast to the rest of the world. But, the other divisions are broadcasted to many countries. These leagues suffer from poor coverage, and are often seen as Dull and slow because of the commentary and the presentation of the package as a whole.
People in India seriously have to consider their thinking in adopting the EPL as the benchmark for developing the football in their own country. Since Sports Culture is absent in the country, the following of the EPL has ensured that Football of true Quality are kept out of the nation's Broadcasting waves. If the youth consider the EPL as the model for supposed success, then they have a reality check coming up. It is time to shun out Poor quality, and look somewhere else wherein Indian football can benefit. Let us stop Talking the Talk, and start Walking the Walk.
