Three terms, Desire, Conflict and Life are all complex and wide to be summed up. You can only make sense of them through instances and eventualy cloak them under the blanket of Generalism. Trying to point out some aspects of life and giving it a general cloak for future generations to follow is a double edged sword.
There are instances in life where decisions are in conflict with the self and desires are sought for to make life better. Decisions on future life is the talking point in ths blog. Here is a classic case of a Masters Graduation. After Graduation, you have to find a job. Now, the question mark is should a job be done abroad or back in your home country?
This question has perplexed people who have gone to study abroad. Majority stay back, but a certain few go back to their country and give their services. Now, this is offset by two factors, one about money and the other is regarding security. We see a lot of success stories being told of people who have done well abroad. But, nowadays, things are not so clear cut.
Now that the West is slowing down a bit, there is reverse brain-draining, and there is a desire to do well in the home country. Now, the monetary benefits still deter people from going back to their own country. The monetary benefits here in a foreign country are much better than the home country. But, in the era of competition, one wonders as to the level of benefits available in countries
One has to acknowledge that Globalization is bringing in Prosperiety, but only to people who are able to afford the benefits. This is applicable to people who are pursuing their education in a foreign country. The benefits and skills are spreading all over the world in a nutshell, due to economic ties and technological benefits. This has benefited people of countries belonging to several strata.
The conflict of monetary benefit in a foreign country plus the desire to bring skills back to a home country will turn to be the biggest gamble in the cycle of life. Some people may be good gamblers, but one should have focus in this decision making, only then can one be content and fulfilled in life.

Just Think about it
I am writing about a song, and I shall try to do justice to it. A beautiful composition is often ruined by a narrow perspective.
Its Phil Collis and the song is "Another Day in Paradise". The visuals and the melody are simply breath-taking. The visuals portray the plight of the unfortunate in natural calamities, refugees, poor and homeless people. The lyrics compliment the visuals, and the message is out there for the individual to think. Here is the link of that song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftlYLcEW_I4
The message for this individual is that the Poor are there everywhere. Basic materials to survive are at a premium, even in rich countries. The factor of prospierity is only measured in Statistics, numbers and prominent economists. But, individual people demands will always state an unhappy state of mind. The danger of State power and ideology is that individuals are forced to be in that position and they remain there.
In the world of today, the poor will remain poor, because Capitalist economic policies are at such extreme levels of vagueness. No one knows what is prospierity and reality on the ground. This blurring is exactly what is intended by the power elite, both instituitional and governmental. To consolidate their power and decision making base, the poor are furthur squeezed into a tight corner.
I realize that I may have diverted away from the main meaning of the song. But, we have to think about the notion of the plight of millions, the lack of empathy among the rich, powerful and ordinary well to do individuals. The basic thought of Paradise itself is shrouded in Irony, because it is dependant upon the status of individuals within the social framework.

Evils of Reality, Competition and the Mainstream
Taare Zameen Par, meaning Stars on the Ground, is one of the gems of Bollywood. In the face of all the muck that is being produced, this stands out as one of the best films ever made. I can go on and on about the movie, but i want to focus on the aspect of Competition in this world and the Individuality.
The film focuses on Children, and the subject is upon a kid with certain learning disabilities. He does not do well in subjects like Science, Maths, Langauge, English, History and other subjects. Instead, he is a great painter and his thoughts are the world that he lives around. Everyday happenings, natural stuff and the elements that make up this beautiful nature are his stuff.
The message is quiet clear. EVERY CHILD IS SPECIAL. There are qualities in each and every one of us, and we should think what brings up happiness. A dialogue in this film states it all. It says that there are some gems in this world, that had their faults, but they persisted and thought in their own way, and they had a big impact on the world.
Even children with defects have something special in them. But, the unfortunate thing in normal human beings like me and some millions is the fact that we can NEVER understand them. There are few who will donate their services to help them, but in this world of today, Money only talks. Patience, empathy and kind-heartedness are all in a premium.
This film has implications for the Adult world as well as brings to light the evil of the mainstream, Capitalist dominated world of today. Of course, let us not be mistaken that this critique could be expanded to any other ideology other than Capitalism also. The curse of this competitive world is being felt by children and by teenagers.
Children are under constant pressure, and teeeners, instead of enjoying their secret ambitions, are forced to indulge in another career only for the sake of money. Life becomes an assembly line of events, and this is transmitted to generations. After Education, find a job, earn money, earn more money, get married, settle with wife and kids and alienate parents and continue to live like a machine
This cruel world will ensure that people do not maintain their niche, and do things that will satisfy some vague power elite. If one slips up even slightly, the selfish others will destroy that person and ensure he/she doesn't get up. Every person is special, as mentioned, and some contribute in their own way with their own time.
Over some posts, I have stated that mainstreaming is important so that social tranquility is achieved. But, mainstreaming is a curse if a person's individuality is destroyed. Under the guise of money, life will be dictated and their ambiion stagnate. Decisions which will give individuals happiness and contentment will be sidetracked under the guise of money and competition.
The world of today is such that individuality will burn out and there will only be Robots with Blood working like machines. The author, in the future, will try and establish his own niche and be safe, because he has concluded that the world is indeed a cruel place to live. He will have to face taunts, because he is not ambitious.

Mob Vigilance
Today, i saw a woman being beaten up on TV by a mob in a village in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from the ignorance angle, i would like to focus on Mob vigilance and the factor of taking the law into individual hands. Is it beneficial or is it taking social tranquility for granted?
The case of People taking the law into their own hands is a double edged sword. This might be effective if the system within which it operates is constraining the Citizenry. If governments and the judiciary are completely stagnant, then it becomes necessary to take vigilante action to change the system. But, this could be counter-productive on many occasions.
One could be the context. Situations like the one witnessed in the hamlet of Andhra Pradesh may be viewed from the point of view of ignorance. Mob vigilantism can take social tranquility for granted. Mob vigilantism may not have many things different from Anarchy in that sense. Mob vigilantism is vague, and passions can be easily inflammed. The main problem with Mob vigilantism is that there is no guarantee of control.
This is the reason why Mobs are the most feared in society. Because to exert control on a vague entity impossible, mob vigilantism may be counter-productive to society. Many films might call for Citizens to take the law upon themselves, but in many of those cases, the aftereffects could be equally disastrous. The thing about Law and Mob is that Mobs are vague, Laws, only after interpretation can be concrete. So, it could be better if citizens follow the law, how much ever it may sound constraining.
This calls more for citizen education on the political affairs in the country. The media can only highlight, but is upto citizens to pursue their own conscience of politics, because without political knowledge, mob vigilantism can become an unfortunate requirement.

The Truth of anything
Truth is the most subjective word ever used. One man's truth may necessarily not be the other person's truth, especially when things are not tangible in the immediate time. But, one man may possibly change that. The oratory powers of this guy is mind-boggling, and the best part is he balances logic with theory. This deadly combination is being tested in one of the most scrutinized religions in the world. Dr. Zakir Naik has tajen it upon himself to explain the true nature of Islam.
Dr. Zakir Naik has combined logic with fact, and one should listen to his speech if he/she has to dispel the wrong images of Islam. Let me first state that I am an Atheist, but i do not support defamation of any religion on a false ground. The choice being an Atheist is purely a personal choice, one that I am comfortable with.
Dr Zakir Naik may bamboozle you, may shatter your perceptions, may stun you. Some people may also dismiss him as Anti-Semitic, Fanatical, Dangerous, but there is no denying his intelligence and his depth of knowledge.
The combination of everyday Logic and perception is something that is lacking among orators or people in today's world. Logic has been blurred by the Materialism that is present. Some may find his talk to be unbelievable, some may find it offending, some may find it mind shattering, but it is better than being ignorant about it. The world today has to dispel its ignorance to any particular entity, so that there can be mutual understanding and peace between different cultures.
The world needs more Dr. Zakir Naiks to dispel the dark cloud of ignorant Islam. The only way to defeat the Jihadists and the terrorists, who indulge in killings is through logic. Bullets, Bombs and other things have failed. Maybe, this could be an instance of success. Here's wishing Dr. Zakir Naik all the best for his mission.

The Controversy rages on
First, poor umpiring in the Sydney cricket test match dominated the result. Now, the aftermath of the Sydney test has been cloaked with Racism. This is the second consecutive time it has happened between India and Australia, and the person involved is the same. Andrew Symonds may now want to think twice about coming to India, for he has been the target of alleged Racism twice.
In my previous posts, i have argued that Racism differs from place to place. Now, the Monkey chant against Symonds has been touted Racist. Many Indians and 'ordinary people' do not consider the Monkey word as Racist. We all have evolved from Monkeys. I do not know any freak who has evolved from an alien. I would only suggest this one test. If someone who does not know you, and in a moment of aggression calls you Monkey, see if you get offended or angry. Majority of the times, it will be found out that people get extremely reactionary on being called a monkey.
NO ONE likes to be taunted on the way they look. I will ask the people of India one thing. If they support a player who alleged he did not indulge in Racism, what about in your house? Casteism and Racism are prominent even in India, and now from victims we are moving on to be open racists. Of course, doubts will always remain whether Harbhajan Singh, the player involved in the centre of the storm, really said it.
The thing has become a game of tit for tat. Indian players and administratrs have launched a similar complaint against one Australian player. What will be the outcome of that is uncertain, but this also will highlight the alleged double standards of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Let me state again, that AUSTRALIANS ARE ALSO NO ANGELS. I said it yesterday, and i will say it forever.
The main point is a formula can be made out of all of this and which sums up the debate. POOR UMPIRING+ BAD LUCK+ RACISM+ INDIAN TEAM INCOMPETENCE= CONTROVERSY. The outcome will be keenly awaited. This may either expose the double standards of the ICC, it may expose Australian lying or it may give Indians the new tag of new age Racists

A lost chance and Sportsmanship!
The first test match for India in 2008 has drawn its fair share of controversy. The problem was about the umpiring. There were some horrible decisions against both teams, but India bore the brunt of the wrong decisions. The outcry from the Indian Public, as expected, was of anger, bitterness and accusations. If India wanted to keep alive the series against Australia, they had to draw the Test match in Sydney. Now, they have to win two tests on the trot to level the series. That might be a WORTHY achievement, because AUSTRALIA ARE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
Let me for now focus on two aspects. One is the Umpire vs Technology and the other being Public Outcry vs Sportsmanship. The Sydney test match has shown that Technology has to be employed by umpires in case of doubt. It can be quiet tempting to point out that decisions are made on the basis of instinct and tangibility. But, mistakes happening 5 times in the same match are just unexplainable. But, on the other hand, Technology gives you some doubts regarding instances of Touch and go situations. The Umpire, at the end of the day, will have to rely upon his judgement. So, we are back to square one.
This arguement will now gain momentum in the aftermath of what happened in Sydney. But, it may not lead anywhere. Technology may make the umpire obsolete, but there can be no back up. Machines are also not perfect, and so this debate will occupy centrestage till the time the next match is played on the 16th.
No doubt the Indian team is devastated. So many decisions have gone against them, but such is the sportsmanship of Anil Kumble that he has taken it in his stride. But, unfortunately, the Indian Public, as expected, have not taken it in a sporting manner.
There are two arguements here. India were not looking to win the Match in Sydney, they were battling it out for a draw. That approach always backfires in Australia, because the Aussies are on your case all the time. They never give up, and so will maintain pressure at all times. The Indian Cricket team has always choked, and when it comes to pressure, they do not handle it well. The mindset with which they approached the day was itself wrong. They should have counter-attacked, but thats easier said than done.
When the team has damaged the batting line up and selected favouritism, then this is bound to happen. Any Indian player in India WILL perform on India's countless benign uncompetitive wickets. But, when you face true Quality and pressure in Australia, then the Indian Batsmen will suffer.
Another arguement here is that Sportsmanship is absent and will continue to be absent in the Indian public. On the web, there are hate communities and personal defamations. The media has hounded this issue and ensured that the unmpires involved will have a tough time in the remaining series. They have forgotten that the Umpires themselves are human. I would like to see ordinary people take up the role of an umpire. Having said that, the umpires out there made too many mistakes to be forgiven.
India NEVER stood a chance in Australia. If majority of the people thought that India might win, then they had a heavy dose of Mass-Hallucinating drugs. By this behavior, the public have shown that they are Cry Babies. One only has to look at Kumar Sangakkarra, who himself got a bad decision, but moved on and is playing like a man possessed. This is why Sri Lanka perform better than India anywhere in the world.
Why have people made a mountain of a molehill? The Batsmen are also at fault. The Indian batsmen went in defensively and that cost them. Mark Butcher of Englnd did not do that when England chased down 315 against Australia in Leeds 2001. HE ATTACKED, INDIAN BATSMEN HAVE TO ATTACK. Why blame the Umpires alone? Blame the pathetic batting display of the Indian 'Batsmen', exuding some like Ganguly, Laxman, Tendulakar and Dravid. The tail-enders could not survive a part timer. They could not LAST ONE OVER.
The Indian Batsmen and the Umpires are two agents responsible for this. Both complemented each other well. But, let us not forget that even the AUSSIES ARE NO ANGELS

2007: Looking back-Part 3
The Middle east and the Sub-continent continue to define the Geo-Politics of the world. The Middle east continues to be the most volatile region in the world, while a new powderkeg has emerged in the Sub-continent.
The Iraq conflict seems to be under control. The troop surge has helped deter the terrorists, so thats why the level of attacks this year reduced. Although they still continue, they are much less than 2005 or 2006. But, challenges are continued to be met by the 'Coalition'. The British withdrawal from Basra seems to send a signal that a sense of depletion is setting in due to the continued violence. Although secterian divisions remain, they have not manifested out violently as previous years. The Sunnis are now co-operating with the Americans, while the Shias have not indulged in large attacks for a while. But, one wonders about the stability of this scenario, and 2008 will test it even furthur.
This time, more than the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iran's nuclear programme continued to dominate headlines. The standoff between Iran and the United States led to a possibility of a Third World War. But, now, the tensions have eased off, but they still remain. Iran's president continues to defy the US, and the US is considering its options due to the continuing standoff in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel and Palestine still remain deadlocked, with an instance of reconciliation being Anapolis. The peace process may start in 2008, and one wonders whether the two sides will compromise.
Another volatile front has opened up in the Middle East. The Turkish military offensive against the Kurds in Northern Iraq threatens that stability. The perennial problem of the Lebanese government deadlock continues to be a threat to that country recovering from the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, while Syria is not trusted by the United States. If there was one other nation which evoked emotional responses was Saudi Arabia. When the King of Saudi Arabia visited the UK, there was an uproar among several newspapers about his arrival and for the kingdom possessing a bad human rights record.
If there is a new powderkeg in the world, it is the Sub-continent. The process began slowly following 9/11, but has rapidly deteriorated following the Lal Masjid standoff in Pakistan in July. With the Taliban and Al-Qaeda becoming resurgent, the US war on terror seems to be heading nowhere. Now, the entire subcontinent is tense following the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. This has perhaps hastened the destruction of Pakistan as a state. This assassination is now leading into a vacumm, which will be filled up by the radical elements. Only a genius can solve the current problem Pakistan is into.
The situation in Pakistan will shape India's outlook to that country, combatting terrorism as well as negotiating peace in the Kashmir issue. With the economy in full throttle, India will have to get over Coalition Politics to deal with concrete problems. The Sri Lankan-LTTE battle enters into the 21st year, with the LTTE losing momentum. Whatever be the outcome of the conflict, this has scarred the subcontinent more deeply, and one which the world will welcome for peace. Everybody seems to have forgotten the plight of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Myanmar may perhaps represent the tragedy of the year. The repression of the Military Junta coupled with the News of the Monks uprising gripped the whole world. Brave underground reporters managed to get some picture about the plight of ordinary Burmese and the role of the Monk in the struggle. But, it followed other tragedies, it died a forgotten lonesome death in the pages of the media. Due to the economic hypocracy of some nations, Myanmar's people were victims of Econocracy.
2007 has seen it all. The world will only increase in volatility in 2008, but there are hopes for a better future. 2007 can be safely said as the year where Environmental awareness protocols were launched and are looking to have a lasting impression. The people are starting to care for the Environment, but more than that, 2008 should be the starting where economics do not dictate political solutions

2007: Looking back-Part 2
Europe, more predominantly, Eastern Europe and Russia is the focus. If Europe came in the news in 2007, it was primarily due to one man, Vladimir Putin. If there were any visible signs of a Soviet revival, Vladimir Putin can usher in that revival. Russia's neighbours were plagued with deadlock in their politics. The Orange revolution in Ukraine seemed to be losing momentum, and it was just recently that a compromise solution was worked out. After months of haggling, a government is functioning in Ukraine.
Georgia was also plagued with protests regarding an arrest of a politician. The Rose revolution, which worked for President Mikhail Sakaashvilli proved to also be his undoing. Geo-Politics also dominated Central Europe, with the proposed plan of the United States to install a Missile Defense shield programme in the Czech Republic and other places. The US was setting up detterents against Iran, and so this contributed to tensions between the US and Russia. Poland witnessed a period of intense nationalism, with the Kwaczyneski twins running the show. Relations between Poland and Germany became strained, but with the coming to power of a new moderate Prime Minister, Poland is back on track.
The issues that will plague the EU and the others would be the factor of Immigration. People from Poland, the Baltics and Romania are moving west, and this will test the foundation on which the EU is expanding. This coming years may see more expansion, but it will also test the economic and social strength of the EU.
South America has been on the News Radar ever since the rise of Hugo Chavez. His election has bought in a rise of the Left wing in South America, from Evo Moraeles in Bolivia to another in Ecuador and Peru. This region continues to be in the news for economic, Anti-US feelings and some regional conflicts, most notably in Colombia. This year witnessed the strengthening of the Socialist doctrine in South America. Chavez and Castro are now the two most charismatic individuals in that part of the globe, and their appeal grows stronger every year.
Their appeal may be an Anathema to others. This year witnessed Venezuela souring its relations with Colombia and with the Spanish Monarch. But, at the same time, Chavez has helped in mediating certain situations regarding the FARC rebels and the Colombian government. It mostly dealt with hostages and prisoners taken on both the sides. But, while Chavez grows in Popularity, Fidel Castro may be at the end of it.
His ill health may see him relinquish power in Cuba, and this may set the precedent for a new political outlook in the region, although not drastic. While his brother, Raul continues to be a caretaker, many people feel that Castro might be on his way out. The region also saw the coronation of a woman president in Argentina. Nestor Kirschener's wife took over the powers of president, thus emulating the Peron regime. The continent may be the only one in the world which has two woman premiers, with Chile's Michelle Bachelet.
Natural disasters wrecked havoc in Central America, with Honduras and Nicaragua bearing the brunt. Nationalization of Natural Gas reserves in Bolivia, and the demand for Autonomy might shape its outlook in 2008. Peru is right now witnessing the trial of the former PM, Alberto Fujimori, who is believed to be guilty of human rights violation and corruption. South America might be something to look forward to in 2008, but unless the system in individual countries collapses because of unexpected threats, the region has a bright future. The best bet to preserve this could be Brazil, with its booming economy and also with the discovery of Oil in its coastline.
The Middle East and the Sub-continent will be looked at in the next post

2007: Looking Back- Part 1
2007 was a very interesting year. As this decade of the 21st century draws even closer, events are getting more bloodier, and the future seems uncertain. The world and its people are even more at the crossroads then ever before. Decisions are getting harder to make, and the polarization has not made things any easier for the ordinary individual. This post will not recollect all of them, but rather some interesting pieces of News from continents where no one knows much about.
If there is a feeling of Deja-Vu around the world, it is resonated more in the continents of Asia and Africa. As each year passes, events seem to occur which changes the entire dynamics of the region. These incidences can set back development by decades or can increase instability and volatility for the time to come.
As I am writing this post, events have gotten very bloody in Kenya. The claims of Election Fraud have polarized the whole country, thus letting blood flow on the streetS. Kenya joins a band of nations that are struggling to cope up with Democracy. It could be Rwanda, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Congo, Zimbabwe and Somalia. There are many more on the list, but it can only be speculated. If the world knows something about Africa, it is only with regard to Darfur and Zimbabwe.
These two events have eclipsed other major incidences which plague Africa. Darfur is now losing hope for a resolution, and Zimbabwe continues to disintegrate, leading one to believe that it is now beyond repair. By the time Mugabe departs from natural causes, Zimbabwe may have gone too deep into the Muck of destruction. The African Union (AU) has also managed to be ineffective, because of its internal bickerings. The AU could not maintain security in Darfur, rather it had to scramble out of the place to protect itself. The AU force needed protection!
Congo continues to burn, involving other nations into the mix. Africa's world war shows no sign of ending, and with volaitility all around, it may continue well into the year 2008. But, if a region has witnessed change, both good and bad, it has to be Asia. This diverse continent is in the grip of Climate change, Terrorism and Olympics!
2008 promises to be China's year, for it will host the Beijing Olympics. The time has now come, when China's economic clout and its growing Sport Superpower status is put on display. This has not come without problems. Beijing continues to suffer from Pollution, and this may put the factor of Environment firmly in the minds of the Chinese, How things develop both within and outside of the Olympics in China will be worth seeing. Australia entered into the new year with a change in leadership. For a dozen years, Australia Prime Minister John Howard made the country as strong as ever, and now the new Prime Minster Kevin Rudd has only to prolong that. The best part was that Australia agreed to sign the Kyoto protocol on Climate change.
Australia continue to dominate the world of Cricket. In 2007, they became the first team to win 4 world Cups. The 2007 World cup held in the Caribbean islands showed that Australia are the greatest team on this planet. The incredible thing will be that they went the first decade of the 21st century undefeated in a World Cup Match. Their domination will continue for a long time
The rest of the continent witnessed natural calamities and political changes. From and earthquake in New Zealand to Thailand Prime Minister Thakshin Shinawatra getting removed by an Army coup, the continent witnessed several incidences. But, looking at how diverse Asia is, it is a bit unfair. I will come back to it later
