Saddam Hussein executed

The spark has been ignited, the world is now waiting for the fire to engulf the Middle East. Saddam Hussein was executed today, and with this Iraq enters 2007 in an atmosphere filled with hatred, blood and tension. The US and the interim Iraqi government now will have to brace itself for more violence, the only difference being that the dynamics of this violence can destabilize the Middle East for a long time.

Saddam Hussein was charged with killing 148 Shiites in 1982 at Dujail. He was also accused of Gassing the Kurds in 1988. This trial has gone on for nearly a year, and this verdict has now raised eyebrows throughout the world. Human Rights Watch group says that Saddam did not get a fair trial, whie the world has questioned the legitamacy and the urgency associated with Saddam Hussein's execution. India strongly condemmed the execution, while several British MP's called for the abolition of the Death Penalty altogether. Some others questioned the composition of the tribunal that dealt with the case of Saddam Hussein.

In the end, the debate will rage on as to wether the trial was conducted in a fair way or not. The US now faces rough times ahead. US President George.W.Bush called the execution an Important milestone for Iraq. However, wether this milestone will be for the good or for the bad will only be judged by time. He also said that Saddam Hussein's execution will not halt the secterian violence, which indicates tough times ahead for the US security forces. With the start of Eid and the Haj, passions will indeed flare up among muslims all over the world. The heat is now on in the Middle East, and it wont be long before it turns into an out of control Fire, which even America might not be able to prevent this time.
