The Holocaust is now a topic for a hot debate. It is going to happen in Iran, where President Mahmood Ahmedinijad has called on 30 scholars to attend a conference regarding the Holocaust debate. At a time when there is subsequent tensions in the middle east regarding Iraq and Palestine, this debate is all set to add fuel to the Middle East fire.
From the time he has come into office, Mahmood Ahmedinijad has called for Israel to be wiped off from the map and also questioning the existence of the Holocaust. He has believed that the Holocaust has been used by Israel as an excuse to create their state, and hence has refused to acknowledge the occurence of the Holocaust 60 years ago.
This "Debate" will not win Ahmedinijad any friends in the west. His continued insistence for Israel to be wiped out from the face of this earth is bound to make the situation tense and could in the near lead to a showdown between Israel and Iran.
For decades on decades, the world has been told that the Holocaust did happen. More than 6 million Jews were killed by Hitler's Nazis in World War 2. The ensuing death March and the death walk from the concentration camps has been well documented and well photographed. The Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem displays the horrors of the holocaust as well as provides a memorial site for all the victims who perished in the camps. This has been one of the most tragic incidences that have taken place in the history of mankind.
Now, all of a sudden, President Ahmedinijad has opened the Pandoras Box and claimed that there was no Holocaust. How should these actions be interpreted? Should it be interpreted as a statement of Brazen, Hardline Nationalism? Should it be interpreted as a Personal Prejudice only to gain Political Mileage? Wether it should be interpreted as a symbol of a man standing up to the West and contradicting their "accepted" fact? The subject is surely inflammable, and looking at the History books, it seems to be suggest that the Iranian President seems to be on the wrong side of History, and his antics could ultimately affect his nation's future.
