This is the fundamental problem that humans have. What do they define as right and wrong? I have said often that due to the dynamics of social setups in this age, the lines of right and wrong are blurred. Many people are at conflict with this scenario, and it reappears time and time again when we deal with family, at work, with society, and to a broader extent to the nation as a whole. Certain people have compartmentalized right and wrong into Ethics and the Morals, but even here, a certain section has loopholes which needs to be plugged.
The final part of the heading deals with the middle ground that puts humans into conflict when determining right and wrong. All this at a time, when Irrationality and decision making are marred into the moral swamp, and also when everybody is proclaiming the end of good. Already, due to this situation, many so called Prophets are predicting the end of the world by 2060! But, leaving that aside, what determines the good and the bad?
It has been observed from the last part of the 20th century till now that lines of good and bad have been blurred. What can be the factors that contribute to this blurring? Could it be the societal orientation towards Materialism and Money? Could it be the emphasis on Individual Microcosm rather than broader good? Is selfishness overriding the path of achievement? Or is the human being in general confused about what is the aim and direction of life? All these questions will attempt answering, although it might not be a satisfactory explanation. As mentioned, this is what I see and this is my interpretation.
Nowadays, Materialism and money dominate. So much has these things impressed upon the psyche of individuals that they are lost without it. Materialism and money provide the easy way to satisfy the wants of people, and provides people with Short term happiness and security. Now, because of this short term, the broader good is not considered. These factors lead directly to the microcosm that individuals are building, and thus throws out the longer and broader future out of the window. The motto of "Living for the next DAY" has gained momentum in this century. Now, in order to consolidate this moment of security and happiness, individuals sometimes lean towards Jealousy.
The pursuit of a better life can only be achieved by either Hard work or by Deceit. In the pursuit of the latter, ethics, morals and principles are compromised, as the individual gets a house to live, clothes to wear and something to eat. There is no denying the fact that there are millions who work hard for their money, but nowadays, people twist the rules to go ahead in the Hedonistic aspect of life. Thus, grounded and simple individuals will be confused as to what is the target in life, and this is where the conflict between Good and Bad intensifies.
This certain Gray matter is one which will torment generations in this technocratic age. Technology might possibly initiate a sterile way to deal with it. Sterile for the fact that Humans themselves will probably give up to fight this battle themselves. Good and Bad can be clearly defined if the Individual's conscience is clear. If he can maintain this clarity and openness in his conscience, only then will lines not be blurred. But, for the moment, Human beings are subject to confusion for prolonged periods, as we embark on the path to understand Clearly what is Good and Bad
