I have written something on this topic quiet a few times. But, i cannot help repeat it time and again. I only do this because i believe my nation should rise beyond the so called powers of the world and hold her own. But, my nation is confronting Apathy and bottlenecks in several of her Citizen activities. Lack of will as well as self importance is going to lead to chronic problems in this nation.
Once again, the feeling of this Apathy has been highlighted after watching Rang De Basanti. Truly, a path breaking Indian film, which highlights the dangers of Apathy and will. To add a backgrounder to his, i am reading Jawaharlal Nehru's discovery of India. Both deal with colonialism and its impact upon India. The British ruined us and almost crippled us in their years of Imperialism. But, fortunately, there was an enlightened group of Revolutionaries who cared for this nation. To juxtapose this in today's time, Democracy and Dictatorship has a fine line. Democracy degenerates into Dictatorship if the Citizens stop caring about the working of the nation.
All the revolutionaries and ordinary people who underwent torture at the hands of the British in jail during colonial times had a goal. They strengthened their mind to overcome the pains inflicted on their body. The conscience of these individuals was clear and unwavering, and that made them immortal. Let us now forget the political cloak that they wore. Socialist, Pacifist, Radical, Communist, Religious people, all during pre-Independence, played their part in pulling the nation out of troubled times. Men like Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi and other revolutionaries were there for India. In today's time, who is there?
This frightening aspect has not been looked upon. Who can help this nation if democracy degenerates into a Police state? The Media are neutral, because it is their fundamental principal to make people informed. Nobody should expect the Media to bring about the wings of change. The Political Process can only be strengthened if there is active participation of people, whose conscience is clear and whose will is resolute beyond measure. Politics is a very tough field, and people who get into it are indeed brave as well as worthy.
The last statement in short means that this is the era of the common man. Leaders and other influential people can only work if the common man helps them out in the decision making and implementation. It is seen in the Business realm as well as in Capitalist times of today. The worker gives shape to the product, whereas the influential managers implement the product to good use, and ultimately highlights their functions. So, to put it in the social parameter, the common man must shatter Apathy so that the nation can proceed ahead.
In the Pre-Independent era, Leaders emerged who took on the British head on. But, in today's times, Individuals should not look at Leaders to bail them out of trouble. They should rely on One thing only. The Power of INFORMATION. Today, if a person is well-informed, he stands out of the pack. Leaders are made because they are well informed and have a grasp of things around them and on a wider scale. Citizens need to possess Information at any cost, and in Hindsight, this is not at all difficult.
This age is not called Technological age for nothing. Citizens today are armed with several Technologies that bring information right at their doorsteps. World Wide Web has penetrated majority of the Citizen's household, and hence they are just a click away for the information that they seek. The thing that makes Information potent is taking action. For this, the factor of Apathy has to be shattered. If Apathy is shattered, then Vigilance and Accountability have to be undertaken.
This involves the question of the mind as well as that of will. Citizens of this age need to have a resolute mind and a firm conscience. To add to this, a strong knowledge of what is right will give boost to this. This could perhaps be the formula for eliminating Corruption in the country and to usher in Transparency in democratic institutions.
ELIMINATION OF CORRUPTION AND BRINGING IN ACCOUNTABILITY= CITIZEN COLLECTION OF INFORMATION ON ISSUES*NUMBER OF CITIZENS+ EXECUTING INFORMATION WITH AWARENESS TO MASSES+ BUILDING PATHS BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND DEMOCRATIC FOUNDATION+ CONSTANT CITIZEN VIGILANCE* MEDIA.
This is by no means a perfect formula. It may have ignored several factors of social and economic dynamics, but as it involves vigilance and accountability, it promises some success. But, i shout it out and say it again, India and the people can rise only and only if India first Awakens. Shattering Apathy as well ushering in the Vigilance revolution can bring about change. A clear conscience about what is right is necessary in order to avoid being caught in the Crossroad of events. A firm stand by Ordinary men, with strength in numbers will lead to the Perfect Democracy.
