Ever since Greg Chappell took over the reins of the Indian Cricket team, nobody would predict that such stormy times would await Indian Cricket. The very first storm that Chappell had to face was in the beginning when Sourav Ganguly was unceremoniously sacked and stripped of the Captaincy after the Zimbabwe tour. Following that Fiasco, the Indian team started performing exceptionally, winning 6-1 against Sri Lanka, 5-1 against England, 4-1 against Pakistan and holding Soth Africa 2-2. Chappell's experimentation with the Batting and Bowling seemed to yield the results, and the Men in Blue were begining to look like a very strong team.
Then, unfortunately, the Problems returned. After the victory against the West Indies at Jamaica in the ODI's, Chappell remarked that the West Indies team had forgotten to win. From that point on, the team has had a slump. Even a first test series win over the Windies in 35 years could not take away the public's distraction of losing the ODI series. Then, the consecutive disasters in the DLF Cup, the ICC Champions Trophy and the South African series has resulted in India coming back to Square One.
The problems now have gotten worse. MP's in Parliament have asked for Chappell's resignation and the public are beginning to lose faith in the team. Coach Chappell stirred up another Controversy by saying that the MPs are paid to say that, reacting to which some MPs of Parliament are trying to move a privilage motion against Coach Chappell.
This is certainly an unwanted distraction for the team already under fire from fans. It would be interesting to note wether the MPs would have raised a similar issue had it been any other social, economic or national problem. By using the platform of the appeal which Cricket generates, they have sought some publicity for themselves. It is because of the uproar by the MPs that has resulted in Cricket being Politicised. They have forgotten the basic fact that this is a Sport, and ups and downs do happen. By the way, the MPs uproar should leave nobody surprised. When something has been said about their pay or something, they will kick up a storm and bark for a while, then will forget about it.
Greg Chappell and the team would appreciate if the Public showed patience as well as a fanatical sense of belief for the team. The public should realize that this thing is afterall a Sport, and ups and Downs will happen. Of Course, Greg Chappell can take some time out and listen to Elvis Presley's Crying in the Chapel in order to ease his and the team's problem.

hey sid, nice blog, keep posting, greg chappell should shut his mouth and let his work do the talking. if he can't perform the tasks he has been given then he has no right to comment about others.
The Indian Team for quiet a long time has not been performing consistently. Even when John Wright was at the helm, India exhibited the same kind of performances that we are seeing even today. One odd victory against Australia or South Africa or the Natwest series of 2002 doesnt add up to an impressive resume. The problem here is that the Indian team in general are not performing consistently and they will benefit by not having any kind of Off-Field distractions. The MPs also have no business in calling for Chappell's head. They will never ever raise a voice similar like this if it is socio-economic issue.
dude...if i can give u a quick retort. i will defend greg chappell till the last day he is in charge of india.
why is he to blame for all the utter chaos the team is in ? did he advocate the nike ad shoot before going to south africa ? did he bring out statements from Dhoni like "I will not play for Jharkhand and East Zone till the end of the tour ?" ! the answer is a blatant NO. Read John Wright's book and u'll know the reality.
India is known for its utterly emotional and instantaneous outbursts and this one wasnt any new. Why does one get in the parliament into the cricketing scheme of things ? When the team is down in the dumps, you want to stamp Chappell's balls, and bring back the Ganguly ghost ! Where were these esteemed parliamentarians when India beat Pakistan in March ? BCCI is NOT answerable to YOU, ME or the GOVERNMENT OF INDIA !! It is a statutory body with its own constitution. The government has NO right to intervene in the functioning of the BCCI. If it wants to reign over cricket, let it take over the BCCI and see what it can do. It was shameful on the part of these Marxist buggers, who couldnt have used a better platfom to express their gratitude to Dada for his show of support during the Assembly Elections in May-June.
I wanna quote my dad here. He says "If India have to win, guys like Greg Chappell and Dilip Vengsarkar have to pad up again". I believe in Chappell and I am sure he'll deliver the goods. All we need is patience. Let the lawmakers do their job, and let Chappell do his.
You are absolutely right, Venkat. Its about time that the people of India BELIEVE in something. We have to Believe and stick to our team till the very end
i guess many will not agree with me but then something like this had to happen. our cricketers do not value the kind of suppport they recieve both monetarily and politically. i opine that it is high time we move onto other games from cricket. i think that unlike most team sports cricket in the indian team is not played like one. also corporate sponsors only look at the money spin off that cricketers offer. i mean lets be frank the only brand ambassadors we have are film stars and cricketers......oops i mean cricket STARS. so as long as the general public buys into this bullshit cricketers bank accounts will keep overflowing and corporate cash registers will keep ringing. as far as chappell is concerned i guess his head will not change the teams future....i guess they are still stuck with the kind of attitude john wright cultivated in the team. and sadly it is a proven fact that indians react slowly to changes in management policies. in this case the entire management has changed.
Well written brother, but it seems that you are in love with cricket and the chappell story is as old as siddhus siddhuisms and i guess if you want to make it elite then write about what is not written and say of what is not said. diamonds are precious not because they shine but because they are so damn rare.
You are 100% right, Alex. The story is old, but hey, when the team loses, the same old thing is bought out in the open. The management system and the way the public and Big businesses look at Cricket in this country are pathetic. With reference to your management question, if that problem is solved, then the team will go places. The preference of an Ad-Shoot for Nike rather than a Preparation Camp for the SA tour shows how the administration is behaving like Money-Mongrels here.
